AWAKE

 So be zealous and repent.
Revelation 3:19

The Gospel of Luke...

Begins by introducing us to a variety of characters who have one uncanny commonality: they are each wide-awake.

Zechariah. Elizabeth. Mary. The Shepherds. Simeon. Anna.

Very few recognize God Almighty when He comes in human form. But those who are watching, especially those watching "day and night" (Luke 2:37), do not miss Him.

Soon after this introduction he narrates

  • Jesus's habit of early morning or late night prayer (Luke 5:16)

  • Jesus's all-night prayer (Luke 6:12)

  • Jesus's late-night prayer in Gethsemane (Luke 22:46)

Then, as we move into the Book of Acts, Luke narrates

  • The early church praying for Peter through the night (Acts 12:5)

  • Paul and Silas praying and singing through the night (Acts 16:25)

  • Paul's preaching lasting late into the night (Acts 20:7-9)

We know this tradition continues in...

  • The Early Church (see The Didache and Hippolytus's Apostolic Tradition)

  • The Patristic Church (300-600 AD "Prayer Vigils")

But then costly prayer begins to falter...

  • The Medieval Church (600-1400 AD) retains night hours of prayer, but they are mostly held by the "professional" monks or priests

  • The Reformation Church (1500-1600 AD) shies away from works righteousness, and swings the pendulum away from costly prayer

That's when a resurgence took place...

  • Puritan reforms (1600-1700 AD) brought costly prayer to the forefront of family and corporate worship

  • The Moravian Movement starts a 24/7 prayer meeting for 120 years — night and day (starts in 1727)

  • The Great Awakening (1730-1750) promotes all-night meetings, prayers, and worship

Finally, industrialization made a violent assault on costly worship...

  • Artificial light, therapeutic religion, ascendant secularism, and the "impracticality" of night or early morning prayer now dominates

IN THE AGE OF  distraction...

We don't want to miss Him either.

That's why we've begun relearning this ancient, desperate, costly manner of prayer.

In doing so, we pray that we may begin to invite others into what Jonathan Edwards calls "concerts of prayer."  Costly prayer is the humble cry of the believer to our Father, letting Him know that only He can restore us.

NOW IS THE TIME TO CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR GOD.

A Brief History

In the spring of 2022, hot on the heels of a COVID-19 shutdown, Joseph Yoon (J.Y.) was surprised to find himself leading a prayer movement at Wheaton College.

This hunger for prayer crescendoed into monthly nine-hour prayer and worship services from 9pm-6am.

Hundreds of college students would gather to offer a full night of time and attention to the only One who was worthy of it: Jesus of Nazareth.

Eventually, J.Y. handed the leadership of these AWAKE nights to J.T. Reeves, whose senior class experienced the Asbury Outpouring of 2023 and has been marked by it since.

Introducing AWAKE Nights

An AWAKE Night is a gathering centered around Isaiah 6:1-8.

  • First, we see God rightly and worship ("Holy, Holy, Holy").

  • Second, we see ourselves rightly and repent ("Woe is me!").

  • And third, after being cleansed, we see the world rightly and are commissioned ("Here I am. Send me!).

For millennia, the church has used the nighttime as a prime opportunity to escape and be with God.

In our age of buzzing, blistering speed, there has never been a better time to retrieve this discipline and draw it back into the church.

We invite you to stay awake.

J.T., J.Y., Tabitha Ross, Colleen Davis, Cade Rex, Gabriel Meyers, and Charlotte Fawcett (among others) unexpectedly came together to coordinate an AWAKE Night with students and alumni for Wheaton College's Chaplain's Office.

What happened next is an even longer story.

But suffice it to say that after the all-night vigil, there was a gathering held at 8am at Chick-fil-A (naturally). At the meeting, every person involved with leading the AWAKE Night figured these nights, this community, and this invitation to repentance was something our generation desperately needed.

Thus began the True Human Project.

Now, we're excited to begin sharing a very old practice to those who (like us) found it very new.

Three years later...

Introducing AWAKE Teams

  • In an age where Christianity often leans toward consumerism more than crucifixion, we seek to invite young men and women into costly Christianity, starting with costly prayer. But a singular prayer event in itself lacks the ingredients for true, long-term change. Thus, we're pioneering what we call "AWAKE Teams."

  • An AWAKE Team is a consecrated coalition of believers who share a common rule of life for the sake of awakening to Jesus Christ in their radius.

  • This includes a one-semester commitment to spiritual practices, mentorship, and one pinnacle prayer event.
